North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
Challenging creek crossing

This nice little short hike was perfect for us since we had a commitment in the afternoon. Weather was great: overcast and partly sunny. Parking for the trail is on the shoulder of the road, near the brick sign. We arrived at the trail head at 9:40am and there was one other vehicle.

The trail itself is mostly flat after the first bit of switch backs. We could see some places where there is erosion on the hillside but the trail is fine. And there was some small muddy patches but that is expected since it rained yesterday and this morning.

There was a small creek crossing the was difficult. Looked like several trees had fallen. The water in the creek didn't have enough rocks to cross it so we opted to cross over on the fallen logs.

The last part of the trail before the turn around is a bit rocky with the old rail bed. It was neat to see the old brick, rails and concrete foundations along the trail. There was also a nice little waterfall to look at while we ate a snack before the return trip. There were several more people on the trail as we hiked back including a trail runner.

Overall exactly what we needed for a mid winter hike.
