We had a great couple nights backpacking on the Olympic South Coast Route. We hiked from Oil City to Mosquito Creek, camping at Mosquito Creek for a couple nights. On our second day, we did a day hike from Mosquito Creek over to Toleak Point.
I was intimidated by having to coordinate around the tides, but with proper planning, it was no problem. Just make sure to study tide charts before you go and have them with you – this is crucial for circumventing around Diamond Rock safely! I noticed there weren't many recent trip reports detailing the trail conditions from Oil City to Mosquito Creek as well, and there've been rumors about this section's state of disrepair. It wasn't awful, but there were numerous blowdowns that were exhausting to navigate with full backpacks. There was also a major blowdown in which we completely lost the trail – on the way in and out – and relied on GPS to get back on track.
Besides this, we had an amazing trip with stunning, sunny weather! We saw river otters, sea otters, and seals. Definitely curious to try hiking down south from Third Beach sometime, and/or checking out the North Coast Route.
