Echoing what several other recent reports said--this trail is pretty easy and well maintained! Such a wonderful hike to start off the HWY 20 hiking season! The greenery was beautiful, the forest smells were fragrant, and the falls were swollen and raging and it was just gorgeous! I will list some fun notes and some cautionary notes because admittedly we got a bit lost and went past the falls, towards Abernathy pass--which is another 7.5 miles!
1. I hiked with a 6 year old and a small dog, both of whom are semi experienced and they did well! We stayed hydrated because it was a hot day.
2. You do not hike through open fields, but rather moderately covered forested area, so please still wear sunscreen, but don't expect wide open fields/meadows like I did (oops). The flowers are nearing their end, but there are still some gorgeous orange ones and yellow glacier lilies! ALSO, you will be hit with an intense smell of Christmas with all the downed pines! It was wonderful.
3. The trail is not flat, but goes up and down moderately throughout. I definitely think most skill levels can do this hike no problem! But don't expect flat.
4. 1.5 miles in, you will see a fork to your left that looks like it leads to a small outcropping. TAKE THIS FORK. You will then want to take another right down to the main viewing area of the upper falls. If you follow the small trail to the left, you will find a small scramble down to another view of the falls. We did not take this one.
