Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410

This was my first visit to this area.  I took the north approach via Twentyeight Mile Road.  The unsigned trail gains its elevation right out of the gate, climbing up the ridge through the trees.  It breaks out into sub-alpine meadows and traverses around to the south side of the peak.  Along this traverse I got to enjoy the sight of two elk playing in the water of Twentyeight Mile Lake, sparring and chasing one another.  At the junction in the open meadow, I turned left and followed the the easy trail as it corkscrewed it's way up to the old lookout site.  I had it to myself.  Bugs didn't become a factor until the top!  Though the small breeze mostly kept them at bay.

I only saw 4 people the entire way up - two backpackers descending and two ladies at the junction who came up from the other side.  More people did eventually show up.  I probably saw a total of 10 people between the summit and my descent to the TH.  Social distancing was respected by all.

While I did carry my camera gear up, it never left my pack.  These were taken with my cell phone.

A fun day to be in the mountains!
