Wallace Falls / Lake Loop — Feb. 21, 1998

Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - West
Pilar

Getting there: Drive US 2 to Goldbar and follow the signs to your left just as you come into town. The trail: I do this loop practically every weekend but I was able to coerce ""Puregold"" into wiping the dust off of his hiking boots and go for a ""relatively"" early Sunday morning trek. We began in the rain and started up the ""woody trail"" towards the falls. The trail is in its standard ""I-5"" shape and only ran into a couple of folks near the top. Puregold had never been to the upper falls (past the main overlook) so we headed up a short muddy section to the final overlook, taking about a one minute look at the falls and then heading up a sketchy section of trail up to the old logging road that heads over to Wallace Lake. After about a half mile on this stretch it began snowing (around 1,700 ft.). Puregold was dressed for an expedition into the arctic so he stayed relatively warm. I in my cotton undershirt and polarfleece vest without mittens was freezing cold. Well it didn' get any warmer and neither did I but we mushed on to the lake in the snow and then began the long descent down a recently made logging road back to the parking lot. The logging is so recent that it is happening as we speak so be careful if you are muntain biking in the area during the week! As we approached the trailhead we began seeing throngs of people and one nice cute little five year old girl inquired as whether we'd enjoyed the hike. Seeing as we neglected to respond to her the answer is ""yes we did!"" Take it easy. See ya on the trail Pilar!
