Entered TCF from Pacific Dogwood off Hwy 525 north of Freeland. There is parking lot, kiosk with map, and signs posted for deer hunting starting October 13, 2018. I followed asphalt road west aprox 0.75 mile until it ended at a construction site and then followed the same route back to car. I saw two cars and no people. I'll try to explore the trails of this area next week. There probably is a better location to enter the forest.

The main trail through Trillium Community Forest Lands starts off Pacific Dogwood Road near Highway 525 on Whidbey Island just North of Freeland. The first quarter mile or so is along the paved road until you reach the red gate on your left. From here it is quite muddy for a while so I recommend water proof boots not tennis shoes. The trail is an old dirt road but the first quarter mile of it is very muddy due to logging going which will be taken place until the end of March to thin out the forest. After that the trail is pretty much two dirt tracks with grass down the middle. You will find lots of Ferns, Douglas Fur, Hemlock, Pines and Broad leaf Trees along the trail. I saw lots of deer tracks, birds and several friendly squirrels. You may not notice as you hike along that you are gradually heading south downhill and will have to turn around when you get to the the sound end near Freeland Sewer and Water District. Also be aware there are many off shoots from the main trail that will lead you to private property but its easy to get turned around. There is a real basic map at http://www.wclt.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/2012_Trillium_Comm_Public_Map.pdf . No better trail maps available yet but its easy to follow the main trail but as time goes buy this newly acquired 653 acres will be developed for more recreational use. A nice area on Whidbey Island to get away and enjoy the serenity of the forest and all that it has to offer. As always get out and see this beautiful state and enjoy your hiking! Take Care, Mike
