Last day on Lopez Island so we checked out Spencer Spit first. Not many people on a Monday. We saw a fun heron show. They do a synchronized dance when they’re fighting over territory. Pretty cool. Saw some kingfishers too.
We like to get to the ferry pretty early and glad we did. We got in line 90 minutes early and only a few cars got on after us! While we waited for the ferry, we checked out Upright Head. Just follow Penny Lane and you’ll get there.
While there, we heard some crows making a racket. They were trying to scare off a bald eagle. The eagle’s nest is in a big for tree close enough to the trail that you can see some of the things dropped over. Bones, feathers, crab shell and other mysterious items.
We saw 2 deer on this trip. The most we’ve seen since the island was hit with a hemorrhagic virus. Zero bunnies!

A nice little spot to explore the shore and enjoy a picnic on Lopez Island. On a blustery Spring weekday there was no problem parking and wandering around. There are a number of picnic tables (and campsites) that are likely coveted during the peak Summer season.
Stopped off on our way out of Lopez Island before heading back to the mainland. A great walk out on the Spit and some lovely historical facts inside the old guesthouse. Fantastic conditions and nice to see people out enjoying the islands and the weather. Brought back some great memories when I was here 15 years ago learning to row a rowboat!

We have one little dog who can’t hike like she used to. Short hikes with long breaks is all she’s up for. Fortunately, that could be the title for every hike on Lopez Island.
The trail to Shark Reef is great. Short and flat. Good for little kids and old folks who need to take it easy. We had our lunch on the rocks, listening to the seals snorting. Woodpeckers, kingfishers and a bald eagle.
Spencer Spit is another short walk with a nice beach for a break. Kayak rentals available here. We saw the ranger giving parking tickets. Don’t forget your Discover Pass!
