South Bay Trail — Apr. 17, 2017

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area

Walked the trail from the start point in Faihaven out 2 miles and returned on Easter Sunday Afternoon. It was a beautiful sunny day. The trail from Faihaven along the waterfront Beas very crowed. But once we crossed the railroad tracks head up the gravel trail toward Bellingham, it was much less crowed and very pleasant

We walked the South Bay Trail on this beautiful Thursday afternoon out and back from the Taylor Avenue dock. Beautiful views of the bay. No trail concerns other than the pedestrian bridge at Boulevard Park is closed due to structural integrity issues and the fishing dock has collapsed there as well and is closed. Many early spring birds out chirping away. Lots of humans out enjoying the sunshine as well.

The boardwalk is always a beautiful, lovely walk. Try to find all the hidden little trails off the main boardwalk. Some of them have benches at the top, go underneath the boardwalk, up high so you have a good view.

Not really a "hike" but more a walk...but we live along the trail and walk it every weekend from Boulevard Park to the Depot market or into downtown Bham. It's flat and easy...sometimes just what you want!

Walked the South Bay trail north from Taylor Dock all the way up to Maritime Heritage Park Tuesday morning. Total distance round trip to the park and back is a shade over 5 miles and less than 100' vertical. No trail issues, but do pay attention when crossing the railroad tracks at Boulevard Park due to the fairly heavy train traffic on the main line there - the relatively new pedestrian signals are a nice addition there. The views of Bellingham Bay are even better this time of the year with no leaves on the trees. The more urban north end is also an interesting landscape with port activities, Bellingham waterfront redevelopment work, boats, etc. Don't miss some interesting artwork on buildings and if you go soon there are some neat, spontaneous holiday decorations along the trail as well if you look closely. An easy to get to walk with nice forest and water views and lots to see.
