Pro-tip: Guests park in spots along the main busy road and walk down steps to what they call the South Bay trail. The access point that WTA sends you to will lead you down a flight to the dusty and level gravel straightaway where you can either go left or right. . .
DO NOT GO RIGHT!!!
I looked at enough info on this trail and the beautiful pics with reviews for this place enough, but there really wasn't much info alluding to this tidbit. To get to the more beautiful part of this hike (I'm assuming) you need to go left towards Fairhaven. This hike was highly rated enough and about what I was looking for to take my 9 month pregnant wife, our 4 year old, our shihtzu, and me with a broken but healing foot, on an easy stroll along the water. It was easy enough. But we ended up taking the right and regretted it.
What I thought was going to be a nice scenic show of the water on the bay of Bellingham was anything but. As referenced before, the gist of this trail is really just a gravelly straight away. Even for a not so great weather day, very frequently trafficked it seems. On the right, the busy highway that is never out of loud ear shot. On the left, sporadic trees and denser spots of foliage that separate the trail from a former garbage dump that one signage post on the trail hinted at that will be becoming part of a nature trail conversion. But in the mean time, it seems like the denser spots of foliage are where people have been throwing away a plethora of said garbage. Even witnessed a fair amount of disposed mattresses, evidence of squatters, and more so when my wife took the dog off a side trail and had an awkward encounter with a homeless guy trying to sleep.
Once we had enough of the eye sores and deducted that this trail was going in the wrong direction towards the part of town that was nothing scenic nor naturely, we doubled back. Weaving in and out of college students on strolls looking at their phones and bitchy bearded hippies on bicycles dinging their bicycle bells while griping about our dog on the trail.
Once we got back to the WTA suggested trail head, we could have kept going in what I will consider the correct direction, but I had enough with what this town had to offer and tapped out to a loss on the trip.
Disappointing for how well this trail was reviewed, how beautiful it could have been, and how I used to really enjoy what the town put on for it's guests years ago.

We have heard of this walk a few times before and decided to try it out.
It it was a sunny beautiful day and lots of people were out, but you always had room to move around and walk at your own pace.
parking was harder to find, but we managed to snag a spot that was good for 2 hours. (We decided to park at the end on the Bellingham side
Washrooms were hard to find and are all located within the park that we found and one was closed. (I have the words smallest bladder).
I thought the woods coffee in the park was pretty amazing, and they have a take out window for those people who have dogs.
We enjoyed the views, fresh air, and fun things to look at. Found people were very friendly and willing to help and offer advice.
A noce afernoon walk that that doesn’t take to long, we will be back for sure!!
