Snow Lake #1553 — Apr. 17, 2000

Central Cascades > Leavenworth Area
Beware of: snow conditions

Jens and I left Seattle with fair weather on Friday planning to spend three days in the Enchantments snowshoeing. The conditions to snow lake were pretty good and we found the trail fairly easily due to some old snowshoe tracks. We spent about an hour lost when we crossed an avalanche slope that had completely obliterated all signs of the trail but eventually found our way up. The first night was spent at Nada Lake where and old bear crossed within a few feet of our campsite. The following morning it snowed lighly as we made for Snow Lake where conditions began to deteriorate. Sleet, ice pellets and then snow made us decide to set up camp at Snow Lake and wait it out before going any higher. It cleared and the afternoon was beautiful and we snowshoed to the other side of the lake for a look around. The evening fell and we decided that in the morning we would climb to the Enchantments if the weather permitted using only our daypacks. But, alas, we woke to snow and headed down to town to enjoy a coffee and ice cream. The trip was good even though we did not make our final destination. It will still be there for next time. If you go up here, take an ice axe for a couple of steep slopes that must be crossed.See ya out there.

Nada Lake and Snow lakes The mosquitoes were pretty much gone when we got to Nada Lake at 6pm on Thursday night and it was a refreshing change from a previous hike in the same area two weeks earlier. My brother, son and I camped at Nada and wandered up to enjoy Snow Lakes, with the water level of Upper Snow at a reasonably decent level making it a beautiful scene. Well worth a day trip this late in the season and as always, a great conditioner. The trail has been well maintained by WTA crews, their work is obvious in many places. Thank you WTA crew workers Dean

WTA work crew re-built the switchbacks at about 3 miles that were covered in the 8/7/99 thunderstorm. We also cleared the slide bewteen Nada and Snow Lake. Many boulders between Snow and the trailhead were removed from the trail. There is still lots of snow in the Enchantments

Hiked in Sunday afternoon as far as upper Snow Lakes. The trail is in fairly decent shape despite last weekend's massive storm. A hardworking WTA crew was on the job getting things in order. Way to GO! The trail is clear of snow up to Prussik. Unfortunately, we had to turn around a straight shot it out from there. On the way out we met a family of mountain goats. All in all an awesome overnighter.

Walked the Snow Lakes trail as far as the bottom of Nada Lake. The trail is in great shape. There was a bad slide a couple weeks ago about a mile and a half below Nada Lake. When I passed through there was a WTA trail crew working hard to repair the damage. Good access to water, and campsites scattered all the way along the climb. Two adult and two young mountain goats came in to the campsite at Nada Lake while I was there.
