I hiked 5 miles in to where the trail rounds the nose above the Dungeness Valley.  The trail was clear and in good condition the whole way.  It appeared that it had recently been brushed out, as there were a number of fresh cuttings on the ground.  Saw lots of great mushrooms and lichens.  I saw no other hikers, but passed a group of mountain bikers as I returned to the trailhead.

Took the Sleepy Hollow Trail from the parking area at Mt Zion until the crossing at Gold Creek, then looped back using the extension trail and FS 28. A nice six mile hike.

Beware of: road, snow & trail conditions

FS Road 28 became near impassable in my car at the spur road with the Deadfall Trailhead. Snow was deep and powdery and more snow was coming down. No way was I going to make it to the Zion parking lot. Didn't even check out Deadfall because I couldn't get my car back into a good spot in the snow after I turned around at the spur. I gave up and headed down south of Quilcene.

This was my first visit to this area and to these two hikes. They share the same trailhead! The Mt. Zion trail must be absolutely stunning in the height of rhododendron season because it meanders through plant after plant. I arrived at the lookout sight in short order and stopped for the little views and a snack. I then headed south past the spring to the highpoint - where I took the photo. I returned to the lookout and was about to head back down when I heard folks in the distance - to the north! So I headed along the clear path that hugs the ridge until it ended at the sharp steep section. Very fun and better little views north. I was back to the car within three hours car to car. Mt. Sleepy Holly trail is also lovely - and very different. It meanders downhill through a mossy forest for a long time. I stopped after a mile or so in complete solitude (in contrast to Zion where there were many hikers). This is a great destination for an early season hike!

Accidentally started down this trail when we meant to do the Mt Zion trail. But all was not lost. There were actually more rhododendron on the trail then we saw on the Mt Zion trail. And it is a much easier hike in forest, meadow, and by a creek. Privy at trailhead.
