Shadow of The Sentinels — Nov. 8, 2015

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area
  • Fall foliage
  • Hiked with a dog

Great trip to see the Sentinels, one party leaving as we entered with our two Newfs and no one else at the location in or out. Hiked the boardwalk twice, very enjoyable in the fog and light mist. I support off-leash dog companions, under verbal control to keep them on the trail (wearing a short lead if others request for hands-on). Will be back throughout the year with visitors to see the changes.

This trail is wheelchair accessible, so it is a hike for everyone. Short and sweet!! I don't know why this hike is not a popular hike, except that it is VERY short! I loved it for it's simplicity.

Beware of: trail conditions

After finishing Sulphur Creek Falls hike I went for a drive up Baker Lake Road to Kulsan Creek Campground and across Baker Dam and back. I then headed north up Baker Lake Road and stopped to hike a short hike called Shadow of The Sentinels on my #45th hike this year. This is a handicap access trail that has downed trees on it so no wheelchair access until the trees get cleared. This is a short trail with signs on it telling the story of the forest and the wildlife that lives among these old growth trees. Several of The Douglas Furs are estimated to be over 600 years old. A nice leisurely hike for family or anyone wanting a little education about the forest with some nice fall colors. I have included a video of the whole trail so check it out on my youtube channel at lmm3181 or click on this direct link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOedUcIFgiw As always get out and see this beautiful state and enjoy your hiking! Take Care Mike

Beware of: snow conditions

2 people found this report helpful

Headed to Baker Lake expecting some early morning sun but didn't get much since fog was still hovering around lake. I did find a good bit of snow around the lake. I drove to the end of Baker Lake which is 27 miles to Baker Lake Trail. Road is not maintain past Forest Road 12 so be careful because its all snow and ice. Weather was turning so I took some pictures of the lake and stopped at the Interpretive Trail "Shadow of the Sentinels". This is a short hike through a growth of very large Douglas Fur that have stood the test of time even during forest fires. Several of the trees along this trail are estimated to be 600 to 700 years old. This trail is built mostly on boardwalks for people with a disability but at this time access requires the ability to hike through 6 to 8 inches of snow. All road and trails leading from Baker Lake Road are snow covered so be prepared with full tank of gas, winter clothing, extra food and water as well as a portable device to jump start your car if necessary. Up here if you run into trouble cell phones are very spotty and not too many people come around. I saw several kayakers on the lake which would have been nice to do since no power boats are on the lake. Clear calm water to kayak and great views of the snow capped mountains. This was hike 47 of 50 I planned to do at age 50. I started off quite late so I didn't get a second hike in like I planned but all and all a good day with only two other cars sighted once I hit the Mount Baker Snoqualmie National Forest sign. I did not do a video of this hike but you can still checkout videos of over 120 other hikes I have done of Washington on my youtube channel at lmm3181. As always get out and enjoy this beautiful state but be careful. Since winter has hit be extra prepared even to stay over night safely if necessary as you seek to find solitude this winter. Enjoy!
