My thirteen year old son and I volunteered here for the day, helping to maintain trail, remove obstacles, improve tread, etc. It was a great group of WTA leaders and volunteers. My son was a excited to earn his Green Hat!

Stopped here for a quick hike after visiting with the Snowy Owl at Sand Point. From the south parking lot, we followed the Ridge Trail up and continued on to the lookout. On the way down, we took the Douglas Fir Trail, which parallels the Ridge Trail.

Access. Paved road.

Conditions. Some slightly muddy spots, and one blowdown on the way up. The tunnel was closed, but you could go over or around it. Maps at major junctions, but plenty of unsigned minor trails.

Crowds. Just a couple of people on the trail and at the lookout. Some of the trails allow dogs off-leash, and most of the dogs were well-behaved.

I did the Sehome Lookout Tower loop while my daughter and her friends volunteered with WTA to rebuild part of the trails. We met the team in the parking lot at the southern tip of the park. The crew got to work and I took our dog for a hike. Trails are easy enough to find and there are maps posted at trailheads. I went along the Douglas Fir Trail to the overlook tower. It is an easy and peaceful <1.0 mile path up that leashed dogs are welcomed on. I turned around at the overlook tower and took the Huntington Trail back after climbing the stairs to check out the view. The view from the overlook tower is not much to see. There were more people in this part of the park.

The Huntington Trail rides along the edge of Western Washington campus and is also dog-friendly. Lots of sword ferns and Douglas fir. Overall, there are nice trails with some climbs and a strong natural feel despite being minutes from downtown Bellingham.

Quick break for a nice wooded walk with my dog midday. Saw few people even though lot was full. A gem in city and university setting. Had a good view from lookout tower and took a different small side trail down. Anyone can do this and there are multiple trail or road options.

Hiked the paved road up to the lookout from the lower parking lot and back via unpaved Douglas Fir trail. Trails are in good shape, though I did have to duck under a blowdown on my way down. Highly recommended for a short stretch in the area.
