One of our favorite trails! This trail is an easy ramble along the Sauk River in Darrington. We parked at the north trailhead to make this a lollipop. A few trees down but easy to go under. The trail is becoming very overgrown in many places with ferns and thimbleberries. The best access and rock bar to the river is about 1 mile from the ADA/picnic area parking lot. We spent about 45 minutes playing in the shallow pools and found tiny fish, possibly crawdads and frogs. The water is still high and moving quickly, so use caution when going down to the river. Lots of butterflies on the trail and mosquitos in the picnic area. Bathrooms are located at the picnic area and were clean, stocked and smelled good. Flowers along the trail are mostly little white forest flowers but you’ll also find daisies and foxgloves. The highlight of the trail is all the berries! Red huckleberries the size of blueberries! Mountain blueberries, blackberries and thimbleberries a plenty! It was a great snack for hiking! Saw a group of about 10 kids hiking and few other people. Otherwise the trail is very quiet besides the lovely sound of the Sauk.

TH: We parked at the at the first parking lot which didn't have any facilities. Apparently the next one (about 2 miles away) has a toilet and picnic tables.
Trail: This is a great family friendly hike through a beautiful forest. We hiked with two 4 year olds. The berries are out and the forest is green! Like most Washington "river" trails you mainly experience the beautiful forest rather than seeing the river. The trail just has peak-a-boos of the river and sometimes can dip your toes in. Overall a great walk in the woods.

First car in the north trailhead at 9am on a beautiful Saturday! Finished in about 2 hours and returned to a full (8-10cars) lot.
Nice, easy trail!! There's a perfect balance between sunlight and shade, and there no major obstacles to maneuver around. The loop is definitely the best maintained portion of the trail, so you notice when you enter/leave it going north or south. I went almost to the south parking lot before turning back north. Saw absolutely no one until I made it back to the loop section; lots of fellow dog-owners.
Overall, just a great trail for a nice stroll along the river!
