Beware of: trail conditions

This trip report was part of a scouting trip for future WTA projects later this spring.   I went on an early day hike (8:30) before it was supposed to rain today.   There are no facilities at the trailhead.   Parking is on both sides of the road, but here the road edges are extra wide so you can get your car completely off the road.   Three other cars present when I started today.

The hike down to the canyon floor is in very good shape.   The descent is about 250’ on four or five switchbacks.   The only issue here are several social trails that have gone straight down the fall line across the trail multiple times.   Please do not do this.  These paths are highly eroded and all the vegetation was killed off.   They are an eyesore and damages the trail corridor.

Once down in the valley floor there is very little elevation change.   You are following the old railroad grade up the valley.   There were several trees across the trail.  Most of these were easy step overs, but a few required going under/over/around.   No issues for most hikers.

The flowers consisted of salmon berry and swamp lilies.    It is early in the season here and other spring wildflowers should bloom soon.

There were a couple seasonal creek crossings that may get your feet wet since you are walking over jury rigged log or stone stepping stones.   Hopefully WTA will clean these up.

I went to the official end of the trail.  The trail originally goes about a mile further but a large rock slides knocked about 30 yards of trail down into the river.   We will soon see if this is on WTA’s project list or the county keeps it closed.   In any case this is a great family trail that allows you to see evidence of our logging heritage.

Beautiful hike. It is a little steep and narrow in a few places.

Was a wonderful hike, some downed trees but nothing major.

One freshly downed tree, a half dozen older log crossings and one rock hop across a creek. Stopped where the trail is closed. Nice quick one with the kids

Started our hike around 11am with 2 kids under 10. Minimal vehicles at the TH. Clear skies and temperatures around 55. Not many people on the trail, which was super nice. Stopped multiple times to take in all the beauty of the old trees and forest growth, found frogs along the river and kids played in the clay. We made it all the way down to the closed off part and ate some snacks before heading back. The river was beautiful, walking along the rock cliffs were breathtaking too. This is such an easy hike to do with kids and close to town. We will most definitely be doing it more.
