Maury Island Marine Park — Jan. 14, 2017

Puget Sound and Islands > Seattle-Tacoma Area

This was a lovely area to explore with some beautiful trees, beach, views, and tons of songbirds. On a really clear day all the surrounding mountains can be seen (mt rainier and the cascades from the beach and the Olympics from near the crest/ridge). Vashon is a cute area to get lunch afterward. Easy descent from the parking area down to the beach then a steep climb to the ridge. Good, short workout and worth the climb. Enjoy!

This was a good hike but tough for our 5 year old. Trails were in great shape. Down was no problem, but as for the way up we took many breaks to allow my youngest to vent. It was a good hike overall but the highlight was the beach for sure

You start this hike at the top and go down to the water. I traveled with a 2 year old on my back and a 5 year old in tow. This was one of the first real hikes I tried with my 5 year old, telling her the only way to get down and back was on her own two feet! It turned out to be a great family hike. Easy enough for her, but still took effort, strength and a thoughtful determination not to whine. Also, throwing rocks and looking for tiny crabs under big rocks made our time down by the water memorable and really fun. They didn't want to leave the beach, but the blackberries we saw on our way down were a good incentive. About 40% of the trail is steep - the rest is switch backs and more moderate incline.

Began the trail at 248th St. at the top of a bluff with amazing views of the water and the mainland beyond. There's a small observation deck with a couple informational plaques and picnic tables. Room for a couple cars to park on the shoulder and that's about it. The trail is in great condition and is very clearly defined and maintained. The trail is basically all downhill through switchbacks as you make your way toward the beach. Since you're hiking downhill, there are plenty of unobstructed views of the water below. There were an abundance of beautiful wildflowers in bloom along the way as well. Finally arriving at the beach, there's about a mile of waterfront to hike along an enjoy. If you're lucky, you might spot the occasional sea creature out in Puget Sound along the way. The hike back up to the trailhead is quite strenuous as it is nearly 100% uphill. I also found myself briefly confused a couple times by intersections in the trail that were not clearly marked. I figured it out soon enough though, so it wasn't anything too troublesome. Overall, it was a relatively short hike with some great views. It was just challenging enough to make me feel like I had accomplished something by the time I finished up.

Left the car at the SW 248th St trailhead around 3pm. There was a portable toilet and space for a couple of cars. Hiked down to the beach, and back up again (see linked tracklog). No issues with any of the trails. Encountered only a handful of people, despite the perfect conditions. The Pacific Madrones were in full bloom.
