Beware of: trail conditions

Nice tranquil trails with some pretty waterfalls. The trails were in good condition and with only a few muddy spots. Lots of small plants and mushrooms are starting to sprout.

This is a new trail just put in by Whatcom county. It is very well maintained, no blowdowns. Dogs can walk off-leash. It is an excellent place to go if you have older kids, dogs or like a quick day hike. The bugs were way better than I anticipated for this time of year and we got out with no bug bites. I read somewhere that this was a good hike for kids but the terrain is steep and some of the lookouts have sudden drop offs with no rail. My son was unable to complete the hike as he got tired from being on such a steep trail. There is a bus stop right at the trail head. So for people in whatcom county you could just take the bus to the trail head.

Lookout Mountain Forest Preserve is now part of Whatcom County Park system. Dogs and non-motorized bikes welcome. Open sunrise to sunset. Several hiking options in the preserve. A 2.2-mile loop with a 1-mile viewpoint add-on, a quick waterfall trail, and lower loop trail. Also, you can head up and up to Lookout Mountain on a good 8+-mile service road. Buttercups, bleeding hearts and Queen Anne's lace blooming. Trails in good condition. Nice parking area and toilets. Good signage in parking lot. Take a picture of the maps before heading up. Enjoy this new park in the Bellingham (Sudden Valley) area located on Lake Louise Road across from Sudden Valley Gate 9.

This is a good hike for this time of year. My internet sources said the hike had 550 feet of elevation, but that assumes you can drive up the road from Lake Louise Road. There is a locked gate, so you have to hike up 450 feet before you start the hike, so there is actually 1,000 feet of elevation gain. There are several lovely waterfalls and a viewpoint overlooking Lake Whatcom with Mt. Baker in the background. The trails are in good condition. I hiked all of the trails in the preserve, which total about five miles. I did not encounter any other hikers. It was a good place to be on a nice day.
