This was a great "get out and do something" while staying in town. We had 3 teenagers with us, and it would have been fine for younger kids. Slight elevation gain. Trail is narrow, not stroller friendly though. One tree was downed across the trail in one section.
We went to the left at the Y and did the big loop. Seemed like a more gradual elevation gain than the descent on the opposite side of the loop. Trail was easy to find, and nice views of the lake. The smaller loop would be all forested not much views.
Wife and I took the kids on this trail on a hot and dusty summer day.
We did not end up going very far to be honest. The amount of overgrown shrubbery along the trail made for a not so fun walk. We kept getting hit in the face with leaves and most of it was grown up to our waists.
After about a half hour of this, we decided it would be more fun to go swim in the lake, so we turned back and went swimming. Maybe if we had went further we would have gotten past it, but between the heat, the brush and the frankly underwhelming scenery we opted for the lake.

I was looking for a fairly light hike with some nice views and this fit the bill. The recommendation to start off to the left and do the Bitterbush section first made a lot of sense. The views of the lake all along this portion of the trail were awfully nice. The Forest section of the trail has some nice interpretive signs that would be great for kids. This exceeded my expectatiions.
