Beware of: road conditions

Mosquitos are in season at the moment, so expect them especially at June Lake Trail. There is a 12" log down on the June Lake trail.

At Laval Canyon, the trail guard rail is down on the north end of the Lava Canyon Bridge. This opening in the guard rail is dangerous due to it being right by the drop off into the canyon and falls itself. Please do not walk beyond this breakage.

Some erosion remains at the top of the Ape Canyon Trail at the upper portion of the canyon.

The Forest Road 83 washout has bumps, rocks, and a bit less depth. Compact cars still have the highest level of risk of getting stuck, so 4x4 and high clearance are strongly recommended to cross the washout. The trail is in good condition.

Forest Road 83 Update as of 07/02/2024: Forest Road 83 has a washout just before June Lake Trailhead. 4x4 and High Clearance is a must due to the sand/mud mixture with active flowing and standing water. Compact cars have the highest level of risk getting stuck. At least one compact vehicle was stuck in the washout on 07/02/2024. Please exercise extreme caution when approaching the washout and use your best judgement when determining whether or not to cross it.

Due to the washout before June Lake Trailhead on Forest Road 83, it is strongly recommended that vehicles without 4x4 and high clearance do not attempt to cross the washout. The washout is a mix of sand and mud, and all non-4x4/high clearance cars have the highest level of risk of getting stuck. There is active flowing and standing water occasionally at least a foot deep.

Beyond the washout, the road is clear of snow up to Ape Canyon and Lahar Viewpoint. Snow may still be present on trails as well as any parking areas, so please use caution. There are some missing railings along the trail, so please use caution as you hike. The suspension bridge is still closed at this time. For more information, contact Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument at 360-449-7800.

We arrived around 8:45am to Marble Mountain Sno Park, headed up road 83 to the Lava Canyon trail.

There is a washout on 83 about a half mile past the snopark.  Maybe a 18" deep and covers the road for maybe 50 yards or so. There is a stream running through part of it, but it is easy to get across and keep your feet dry, at this time. After that the road is clear, no downed trees and the snow that remains is very minimal.

Lava Canyon: We didn't go much beyond the large bridge but the trail we did cover is in good shape. Looks like some boards on the boardwalk have been recently replaced. The restrooms were open and had some TP, but not a lot.

We did our annual road 83 trash pick-up on the return back to Marble.  We collected 1 large storage tote full, plus a 13-gallon trashcan full of roadside litter. Picked up a little at the Sno Park but we were out of room in our containers to pick up much there (and the trash cans near the restroom at Marble were overflowing).

We made it home in time to sort the trash from the recycle-ables, do some yard work and called it a day. Another successful adventure. #hikethestate
