I had
been to Lake Valhalla about four times previously, but had always gone in via the PCT from Stevens Pass. The Smithbrook Road/Trail 1590/Union Gap/PCT access from the ""back side"" is shorter, easier and actually more scenic than the other way. The trail was in excellent condition, except for the first 1/3 mile from the trailhead, where weeds on the sunny avalanche slope are over 6 feet tall and have all but closed in over the trail. Only the passing of hikers keeps it open--it's badly in need of being brushed out. The remainder of the trail is mostly in forest. Mosquitoes were swarming at the lake, and only windy conditions kept it tolerable. Smithbrook Road is in excellent condition to the trailhead.
