3 mile section just north of Copper Butte has significant blow-down -hundreds of trees over the trail. Seem to be actively clearing it but as of 7/1/07 still very painful slow going.

Beware of: snow conditions

Start at Sherman Pass (5575 feet) on SH 20 20 miles east of Republic. Followed tracks on pretty solid snow and dirt 2+ miles to Columbia Peak Trail #24 junction, then .5 miles on that trail to a junction with the Columbia Peak loop trail. I presume that trail goes around the mountain, but it seemed too gradual for me so I just went straight up for 700 feet to the log cabin style lookout which was built in 1916 and is in really good shape. It was snowing while on top, but didn't seem that cold. I removed 45 pieces of flagging that some insecure person had put up when the snow was deeper and had apparently somehow forgotten to take down on their way out. Mercifully they ended after a mile so I could regain a hiking rhythm and a sense of wilderness, the latter aided by the end of human tracks and the start of bear tracks. I moved one big blowdown off the trail but two others will need a saw.
