Hiked with friends and Buddy Boy (the dog) to June Lake on July 4, 2023. The hike was an easy 2.9 mile out-and-back from the trailhead. Not surprisingly, it was somewhat busy with hikers and dogs. June Lake is located on the south side of Mt. St. Helens just inside Mount St. Helens NVM (National Volcanic Monument). The trailhead, however, is located outside the NVM in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. June Lake is beautiful, surrounded by trees and lava fields with a 70-foot waterfall on the far side. We had hoped to get a view of Mt. St. Helens, but were only able to get a glimpse of the mountain from along the trail. Being somewhat determined, we decided we needed to find a spot with a view of Mt. St. Helens. So, we drove down forest road 83 and up forest road 81 to a spot where we were able to find a picnic spot with a great view of the mountain and some gnarly lava fields in the foreground

Great for snowshoeing but be aware that you have to walk on a closed road for almost 1 mile to get to the June Lake trailhead. It was not difficult and was actually pretty enjoyable even though it was raining the whole time. It was so serene and calm. It is a very popular trail but we saw in total 3-4 groups. It was a pretty good Sunday to be outside.

What a perfect fall hike! Arrived at 11:30am and took up the last parking spots. There was a persistent drizzle throughout, decorating all foliage in glittering droplets. The trail was well-packed, clear and not at all slippery. Along the way, leaves were in the process of changing colors. Once we reached June Lake and its waterfall, we did press on due to the rain. If this happens on your nature hike, Yale Park makes a great alternative for lunching with covered picnic tables and restrooms. Happy adventuring!

Tried to hike Pine Martin Trail but directions to it's trailhead were confusing and not labeled from the June Lake road very well. On the way out I found the trail heads much closer to 83 than the description says.
Nevertheless, we hiked this trail instead. I did take my dog, as I see now it says no dogs, however; as mentioned this trail was not our plan. Second time on this trail for me, last time was far less rocks and exposed roots to navigate. I see that the trail hasn't been worked on in quite a few years, maybe it's on the list for later? ;)
Beautiful wildflowers, even saw some salmon berries! Of course the waterfall and lake were beautiful and without disappointment. I also had forgotten about the second hidden waterfall, nice little surprise:)
Overall, good hike, and a great day!
