Good news!  The road leading to this trail has been worked on.  I was avoiding this hike, because from the road description, I didn't think my van could make it, but I heard it was recently graded, so I headed out, and the road was great.  If you've been avoiding Grassy Knoll/Big Huckleberry for fear of the road, now is your chance.

The trail is a bit more rugged, though passable.  Several logs down (including the section I called "the steeplechase", because there are 3 down in quick succession).  All can be stepped/climbed over.  The trail is also somewhat overgrown, and you'll be pushing through bushes in several places.  This is particularly noticeable once you get past Grassy Knoll.  I wouldn't like to do this trail in the rain.

Today, though, was beautiful. Wildflowers were out in force, and the views really are fabulous throughout the hike.

Great views at the top and along the way. Gradual incline except towards the top where it’s steeper. The trail is overgrown in some spots but worth pushing through. Gorgeous wildflowers. The road seems to have fresh gravel to fill potholes.

Road to TH was not bad but rough in some parts.  Trail Head had decent parking for 12 cars or trucks.  The trail is in good repair but in areas very overgrown with brush.  About 11 trees down across the trail.  One area of the trail seemed washed out and had rocky outcrop.  The wildflowers were spectacular. We could see Mt. Adams and Mt. Hood.  AllTrails tracked this hike 7.6 miles and elevation gain of 1818'.
Caltopo 7.73 mile Elevation loss 2100' (699m) Elevation Gain 2100' (700m).

The long stretch of cloudy rainy weather continues and we had no views today, but the wildflowers were looking very nice. This trail is LONG overdue form some maintenance. There are several downed trees across the trail. Also, there are many spots stretches where it is getting brushy/overgrown, which was a problem today since all that brush was wet. We got totally soaked.

For all the times we've done this hike, we've never seen many people, but today we saw 24! We figure it's because the whole Gorge is closed down due to COVID-19 and it's displacing hikers to trails like this.

Road was in good condition all the way.  Gravel road has been graded and there were no potholes.    Was able to go 25 mph in my car.

Trail was good.  A few bushes starting to grow into trail in a few places, but over all a nice walk in the woods.   A few small trees have fallen across the trail but easy to step over.    Went as far as Grassy knoll.   Would like to go farther next time.
