We made what is probably our last drive over highway 20 through the North Cascades this year. Highway 20 is a stunning drive any time of year, but the first snowfalls are always special.
We stopped and to stretch our legs at the Gorge Lake Overlook. I had not visited this short hike before. Gorge Lake fills a deep valley which 100 years ago was a raging river through a narrow gorge. This river, the Skagit, was tamed for our electricity producing purposes.
The trail has a paved out and back section which is suited to all. It also has a gravel loop section which loops you right back to the car. The loop circumnavigates a small bedrock knob. This knob is delicately draped in lush mosses, lichens, and bewitching trees . The total hike is less than one mile with negligible elevation change.
