On Friday 6/23, I worked with a large group of volunteers from the Naval Air Station Whidbey to do some trail work, clearing brush and removing invasive weeds. On Washington Trails Day, Saturday 6/24, I went back to hike one of the trails they worked on that I did not see the day before. I hiked the Bluff Trail from the Gun Battery to a spur near the beach parking lot. The Bluff Trail was in pretty good shape thanks to the Navy volunteers. I went on the spur because I had encountered heavy overhanging foliage in that area on a recent hike. They Navy volunteers had done a pretty good job with that, but they did not get it all. A little more work is needed. It will be cleared soon.

Rate: 5. We parked at the Gun Battery and hiked along the Bluff Trail and eventually down a path to the beach. We walked about a mile along the shore thinking (hoping) we would find a path back up the bluffs. No such luck. We back tracked down the beach and back up along the Bluff Trail to our car. About 4 miles total. The walk was pretty, but I think there are better hikes on the island. If you just want a scenic spot for picnic lunch on the bluffs, this is a nice park.

I hiked Spencers Trail at Ft Ebey State Park. This trail has a lot of small elevation changes, some would likely be slick after rain. There was one small (4-5 inch diameter) tree down over the trail. I cut a section out of it to clear the trail. There is evidence that this trail is fairly lightly used, with lots of small branches and twigs on the trail.
