BE AWARE: This trail is in a state park and during the winter season this park is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Even on Monday holidays like President's Day. The gates are shut and locked, you cannot park your car in the parking lot, and the bathrooms are locked up. If you want to come here I'd definitely check the operating times of the park before coming. I think they classify "winter" as up until the beginning of May some time.
All that said we parked our car right outside the gate (a number of cars had done this) and just walked in. We were just mindful of not parking on the shoulders where there were no parking signs as there were a lot in the neighborhood.
The trail itself was great, but very muddy in spots. Most of the muddy spots you can get around if you hug the trail edge, but it can still be tricky. Wear hiking or rubber/rain boots and you'll be fine. There are areas that have a boardwalk, but the wood is extremely slippery. The park has done a great job of putting down traction strips though so it works. It was a nice walk listening to the rain drops dripping through the forest around you, the birds chirping, and the frogs croaking. Only thing I would do next time is being a towel for my dog to wipe off her feet before getting back in the car as her white paws were brown by the time we got back.
